Important Notice: Our firm can only assist with ICBC claims for accidents that occurred before May 1st, 2021. Unfortunately, we are unable to take on claims for accidents occurring on or after this date.
Even the best drivers can find themselves in a severe car accident. When that accident is no fault of your own, you may have a valid injury claim against the other driver. An experienced injury lawyer may be able to help you get the most out of your injury claim. However, the Insurance Company of British Columbia (ICBC) can complicate your recovery.
The ICBC is a crown corporation tasked with providing every vehicle registered in British Columbia with vehicle insurance. After a crash, you are required by law to inform ICBC of the collision. However, it is important to understand that what you tell ICBC can have a significant impact on your claim. The adjusters for ICBC are often in a hurry to resolve your case and move on to the next. If you misspeak or find yourself pressured by the representative to admit you were at fault for the accident, you could undermine the value of your claim.
The good news is that you are not required to deal directly with ICBC. You have the right to engage a lawyer to deal with ICBC on your behalf. At Preszler Law, our compassionate Nanaimo ICBC lawyers are eager to assist you in your dealings with the insurance company. To discuss your options with an experienced ICBC law firm, contact us right away.
ICBC accident notice requirements
While an ICBC adjuster may try and pump you for information, you are only required to report certain things to them. An experienced ICBC lawyer who has dealt with the insurance company before can take the stress of speaking with an adjuster off of your shoulders.
When it comes to accepting accident claims, ICBC is available around the clock. You are only required to provide basic details about the accident. These details include:
- The time and location of the collision
- The license plate numbers of all involved vehicles
- Driverโs license information for all drivers
- Contact information for any witnesses
While the adjuster may push for more information regarding how the accident occurred, you are under no obligation to provide any further details at this point in the process. Your lawyer has the right to politely decline to answer any questions regarding your injuries.

Do not sign anything
In some cases, an ICBC adjuster will ask you to sign a written statement regarding the circumstances of your accident. It is never a good idea to sign anything provided by ICBC without speaking with an ICBC lawyer first.ย ICBC adjusters have been known to put together statements essentially waiving any right to compensation for you to sign. Their hope is that you sign off without carefully reading the document. In these situations, injury victims with valid claims have unknowingly signed away their ability to pursue compensation.
